Managing Everyday Back Pain

Did you know back pain is one of the most common reasons people go to the doctor or miss work? It's also a leading cause of disability worldwide.

Back pain can be acute (short-term) or chronic (long-term). It can either feel like a sudden, sharp pain, or a dull, constant ache. While acute back pain can last anywhere from a few days to a few weeks, chronic pain can last for months and often requires medical intervention.

If you suffer from back pain, you know how debilitating it can be. How can you prevent back pain? Going to a chiropractor for an evaluation of your condition will help you find the underlying cause of your pain.

There are also things you can do on a regular basis to manage your back pain:

  • Do gentle muscle stretching exercises at least 2-3 days per week.
  • Fix your office space ergonomics, this includes adjusting your computer monitor, keyboard, and chair height.
  • Lift heavy objects by squatting, keeping your back straight and lifting with the legs.
  • Get active! Weight gain can strain your back, and so can being sedentary. Getting regular physical activity can help reduce back pain.

If at any time these activities cause your back pain to become worse or your back pain does not improve, a complimentary consultation in our office should be considered to further evaluate your condition.

Another big cause of back pain comes from working at the office. Many of us are straining our eyes and neck as we sit at our desk, and typing at the wrong height. Putting your keyboard directly on our desk, just below chest level, limits circulation and stresses the joints and nerves in your arms, shoulders, and wrists. This can cause numbness and pain in those areas as well as your back.

How Can a Chiropractor Help with Acute and Chronic Back Pain?

A specific structural correction chiropractor treats the root cause of your pain, not just the symptoms. Why is that so important?

If you pluck a dandelion flower from your garden, the weed seems to be gone for a few weeks, only to return again. However, if you dig up the dandelion's root, it does not come back. It is the same for issues caused by an underlying structural problem.

If you're tired of treating the same symptoms, give something new a try. Sit down with a professional at Pivotal Chiropractic and tell them about your conditions. After an examination, you may learn that a real solution is not as far as you might think and chiropractic care could be what you've been looking for.

  • I started seeing Dr. Andrew last summer after my Cross Fit coach listened to my complaints about my body and urged me to get a consultation. It’s now been almost a full year, and not only do I feel so much better physically—much less chronic pain—but I feel much more in touch and in tune with my body, due to the treatment he provides, and also the at-home stretching that he prescribed. Dr. Andrew is friendly and always takes the time to listen to how I’m feeling, and he never fails to amaze me at how he can assess my physical problems and use his training to correct them. I would recommend him to anyone who has pain and wants to feel better!
